Objective: This study was designed to investigate the effectiveness of vibratory stimulation as a means of managing orthodontic pain associated with periodic appliance adjustment.

Materials and methods: Patients who received initial orthodontic bonding of brackets and archwire (NiTi) were divided into two groups. The first group did not use any pharmacological analgesics or other interventions for managing any orthodontic pain. The second group used a vibratory stimulation apparatus for 15 minutes immediately after archwire placement. Each patient used a visual analog scale to rate their pain perceived at 2 hours, 6 hours, 24 hours, 48 hours, and 72 hours after archwire placement.

Results: The study confirms previous findings that the intensity of orthodontic pain was greatest 24 hours following archwire placement. The results also indicate that discomfort was significantly less at every time interval for those who used the vibratory apparatus.

Conclusion: Vibratory stimulation applied immediately after initial archwire placement significantly decreased orthodontic pain and discomfort during the first 3 days of orthodontic treatment. (19)
